Henry J. Deutschendorf And His Battle With Schizoaffective Disorder

Henry J. Deutschendorf II also known as Hank and his twin brother, William are best known as Oscar in Ghostbusters 2. They are the nephews of singer John Denver. Playing Oscar was the only acting role that Hank and Will had. When they got older, they got into martial arts.

Hank had lived his life far from the spotlight. Together with his twin yet again, he became an instructor for the reputable West Coast Martial Arts Academy in San Diego, California. He loved his job very much and worked hard every day to be the best teacher, mentor and role model for his students that he possibly could.

Hank and Will took over the Academy in 2012 when they were both just 24 years old. But in spite of their young age, they managed to shape the center into one of the most successful establishments of its kind in the area.

Hank had struggled with schizoaffective disorder, a mental health struggle he was no longer able to fight. During his mental health battle, Hank was experiencing hallucinations, delusions, depression, and mania.

Schizoaffective disorder is a combination of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. In the post, William explains: “Hank was diagnosed in August of 2008. If you knew Hank before his diagnosis, you knew a young man who was upbeat, healthy, witty, kind, outgoing, and was always ready to stand up for people. Medication curbed the delusions but it did not stop the voices.

At the age of 29 years old, he took his own life. Will found his brother in his apartment. Cause of death was suicide by hanging. Hank fought for as long as he could

The coroner's report says, "The decedent was a single, 29-year-old Caucasian male who resided with his girlfriend in an apartment in the city of Escondido. On the evening of 06/14/17, he was found suspended by a ligature around his neck in his closet by his brother."

"The side effects of the medication took a toll on Hank. He felt like a zombie, lost his personality, gained weight quickly, slept for twelve hours a day, and had to use all of his willpower just to lift his hand to drink a cup of water. My brother was left with a Band-Aid for a gunshot wound."

Even through that Hank’s life was short, the impact he left in his community is something that will forever be remembered. He taught martial arts with his brother and his students will always remember the kindness he showed towards them. He was loved by everyone that knew him and he is missed by his family and friends.
