When it comes to autism, there are so many things that go inside our heads. We have so many ideas and so many things we want to do and sometimes, we just have to get creative on how to process those thoughts and ideas.
Some autistic people have developed deep expertise in topics that interest them, which some people call special interests. There is a huge variety in these topics, which can range from astrophysics to vintage clothing and everything in between.
Being able to express ourselves in creativity is something we’re should be encouraged to do. A lot of the time, using something like drawing or writing is how to communicate. It can bring other people with autism together since it helps us connect with people who share the same interests as us. Creativity in autism can come in many forms.
Many autistic people are observant and have excellent attention to detail. This can serve them well in professional settings and day-to-day life.
People with autism are visual learners so being able to be creative comes along with how we learn. We see things in a different way and using something like art will help us think things through and help us overcome challenges that come with autism. We use being creative as a way to recharge and get back on track.
There’s been times where people with autism in the film and TV industry who have written movies and TV shows and won awards. People have written books, have become painters, etc. There’s no limit on what someone can do. Autism can take us anywhere.
A lot of the time, we can keep ourselves entertained when we’re left by ourselves. I remember being a kid and playing by myself. My brother would be with friends on a Friday night, and I would be at home playing with marbles in the living room. It was something I liked to it, it was something that I enjoyed.
Since we have a hard time connection with people, being able to come up with things to do will come easy. We come up with our solutions to problems, solutions that will help us in the future.
Many autistic people are excellent problem solvers and can come up with creative solutions with their great pattern recognition.
Being creative can be our comfort zone. We spend so much time doing what we love that sometimes we forget everything else. Nothing else matters when we’re in the zone. We can accomplish so much when we’re on a roll and don’t want to be disturb.
If we can find something we’re good at then we stick with it. There’s nothing stopping us when it comes to our interests. We need a creative outlet no matter what form it is.
Being able to be who we are in a creative world is something that should be acknowledged and encouraged. Let us create something we’re proud off.
