Philip Seymour Hoffman was considered to be one of the most talented actors in the film and TV industry. He appeared in films like Boogie Nights, Twister, Patch Adams and Along Came Polly. Philip had a talent, both in film and theatre. No matter the genre of film or type of play, he was able to do it all.
In early 2014, Philip had moved into an apartment in Greenwich Village, New York. He had recently separated from his partner, Mimi O’Donnell and wanted to deal with his addiction away from his children. His addiction had gone from prescription drugs to heroin. During the time he was in the apartment, Philip had attended a support group and people had said that Philip mentioned that he was doing “okay.”
Leading up to his death, Philip was seen around town. He made a stop at a local coffee shop and had dinner at a restaurant with a couple friends. At one point, his partner, Mimi saw Philip near his apartment and he appeared to be high. Later in the day, two men saw Philip withdraw more than a thousand dollars from an ATM. He made a couple transactions. Mimi was the last person to talk to him on the phone the night before and she said that he sounded like he was high.
On the day of his death, Philip was supposed to be meeting up with his kids, but when he didn’t show up, a friend of his went over to check in on him. When he entered the apartment, he found Philip in the bathroom unresponsive. Philip was pronounced dead at the age of 46 from an overdose of heroin. Philip had relapsed after 23 years of sobriety. He was found dead on the bathroom floor, dressed in a T-shirt and shorts with a hypodermic needle still stuck in his arm and 70 baggies of heroin and used syringes inside of his apartment.
In True West, a place he had done with John C Reilly. They swapped characters every other night during the play’s run. It really showed the talent in both Philip and John when it comes to being able to go back and forth between the two characters.
Philip leaves behind three children. His son, Cooper is an actor and made his film debut in the movie, Licorice Pizza. He was nominated for a golden globe. Cooper also appeared in The Long Walk which was adapted from a Stephen King novel with the same name.
No matter how much time goes on, you can only think about what kind of roles that Philip would have played in his career. He had so much going for him, but addiction never goes away. It's always going to be with you. He tried so hard to remain sober and be there for his kids, but sometimes, addiction comes back and you can do whatever you can to make sure that it doesn't win.
Relapse is a scary thing and all you can do is use whatever you’ve learned in the past and keep trying to get back on track and get clean and sober, but it's never going to be easy. It takes a lot of hard work to get sober and remain sober, but it may not always happen. Sobriety comes and goes for people and in some cases, addiction is a way of life. They lose the power to remain sober and want to go back to who they were when they were in active addiction. Nothing can stop them from admitting they need help. Addiction is a disease and it's hard on everyone involved.
