Andy Gibb grew up with brothers who were international superstars. He was the baby of the family with a 9 year age gap between him and his twin brothers, Maurice and Robin, but Andy was closer to his brother, Barry.

The funny thing is that Andy and Barry were almost like twins despite the age gap, they both looked alike, acted alike and even had the same birthmark.

Just like his brothers, Andy had success in the music industry, but he also didn’t want to use his name to get success, he wanted to get there on his own. His was a different type of road to success but still he wasn't happy within himself. He struggled with having the last name Gibb because everyone was comparing him to his brothers. He never was able to find that level of success.

Andy had Barry’s help when it came to writing and producing songs. His first three singles were number 1on the Billboard Hot 100, but due to his insecurities and his addiction, Andy’s success didn’t last as long as his brothers.

His addiction had lost him a job on Broadway. Andy had a role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and he also was dropped from a TV show called Solid Gold. He had a lot of support from his family, especially his brothers.

In 1978, Andy’s daughter, Peta was born, but they were never close. She grew up in Australia with her mother and with Andy’s addiction, it was hard to remain in contact. Peta described him as largely a distant voice on the phone.

In the 1980s, Andy worked in trying to revive his career, but it didn’t work. He was never able to find that same success as he did years prior. He did go to rehab on numerous occasions, but unfortunately, the drugs and alcohol abuse had already taken a toll on Andy’s body.

On March 10, 1988, five days after his 30th birthday, Andy died. His cause of death was myocarditis (heart inflammation). When the autopsy was done, no traces of drugs were found in his system. He wanted to get better and get clean, but after taking drugs for so long, the damage was already done.

For someone that had the talent and the looks, it became too much. Andy was never able to get away from his name and be someone that wasn’t just the younger brother of the Bee Gees. He wanted more, but he wasn’t able to leave up to that type of success. Everything happened too fast, too soon and it got too much. He wanted to be just like his brothers, but he just didn’t have the power to continue on and have a long career.

Developing an addiction is a scary thing. You start to prioritize your addiction over everything else. Even when you have everything in the world, your addictions become number one.

Andy wanted to live a life like his brothers, but the fame and fortune got too much. He relied on his addiction to help him, but in the end, the drugs won and he wasn’t able to live up with the family name.
