Kids On Social Media
Parents shouldn’t post pictures or videos of their kids online. Even if the child isn't the one posting videos and pictures themselves, it's dangerous. I knew more about other people’s kids than I should because of how often people post about them.
People share so much information about their kids online that anyone is able to access them at any point. The more you tell us, the easier it is for a stranger to be able to track your child down. Anybody can look you up and show up randomly at the spots you regularly go to. We know your child’s name, their birthday, what grade they are in, etc. All it takes is for someone to approach your child, address them by name and tell them that they are a friend of their mom and dad. The kid is going to trust them and potentially leave with that person. It doesn't matter if your social media is restricted or private. Someone is going to find out more than they should.
There have been laws passed where kids under 16 can’t be seen or allowed on social media and family vloggers and influencers have moved to states or to other countries where they are allowed to show their kids online because that’s how they make money. They make a living showing off their kids and once they aren’t allowed to do that, they will do whatever they can to make sure they still can make money off their kids even if it means moving to another country where it's acceptable to have your kids online. Family vloggers and influencers make “easy” money by posting online about their kids and they will keep doing it even if the kids don’t want to.
Social media and being online isn’t a safe place for kids. There are so many dangerous people out there and you're putting your kids in a situation where they're going to think it's okay for them to trust everybody because of how much they know about your child. Stranger danger is no longer a thing now because of social media. It may be useful in some ways, but it puts children at risk because of how much parents post online.
There’s no privacy in people’s lives nowadays because everyone is online and wants to show the world what they’ve been up to. Everyone knows each other’s business because people can’t help but post online.
Protect your kids from strangers by keeping them off social media.
