I saw the breakup scene on twitter so I knew going into the episose wasn't going to be easy. I try and not on on social media when its 911 day since I know there are going to be spoilers and I held on for as long as I could. Watching the scene broke my heart and the episode was something I've replayed in my head. I wanted to analyze where it all went wrong.
This is my theory on what really happened between Buck and Tommy. I understand where Tommy was coming from in regards of Buck wanting this to be a forever thing. I understand that Buck wanted Tommy for life. With knowing how Buck was in past relationships, he leads with his heart without thinking long term. He sees something great, and he wants to keep up that momentum. Buck loves hard and he loves deep.
Knowing that Tommy wanted Buck to be able to explore and get to know himself wasn’t easy. He knew that Buck loved him, that Buck wanted a future with him, but he wasn’t going to let him ruin his chances in being able to express himself and accept other people into his life. He knew that Buck had to find a way to be able to connect with people who may be going through the same things he is. He didn’t want Buck to settle down so soon just because he felt that it was right. Tommy will always be his first true love, but he’s not going to be the last.
I think Tommy will be back, hopefully in season 10. Tommy casually bumps into Buck somewhere and they agree to meet for coffee. Buck will tell him that he’s matured. He spend a lot of time after the break up finding himself and trying to figure out where he wants to go and who he wants to become. He explains that Tommy was the reason he discovered that unknown part about himself. Tommy left such an impact on him that having to goodbye was something that he needed to do. There are no hard feelings towards Tommy. He knew that it was the right thing to do even if he didn’t think so in the moment. Buck wants Tommy to know that he’ll always have a special place in his heart for him and that he hopes that they can still be friends. Buck thanks him for being part of his life and that he’s grateful for the time they had together or that being apart gave them the time to realize that they want to be together and they needed space to be able to find out who they are without each other. They both come to the conclusion that they are perfect together and they want to live life as a couple and do all the life things with each other.
When Tommy said Buck instead of Evan, it made it real. That part gets me every time. It breaks my heart. He had such emotion in his voice. You could tell that he didn’t want to say goodbye, but he knew it was something that he had to do. It was hard for him to walk away knowing that this was going to the last time he was going to see him.
No matter where Tommy goes or who Buck ends up with, I hope they end up back in each other’s life in one way or another. I kmow fans are not happy about how his storyline ended. Especially with the halloween episode and Buck calling Tommy his boyfriend. We expected this relationship to be long term and the fans who are so determined to make Eddie and Buck work are more than happy to see it come to an end. Tommy made Buck happy. He found someone that he was able to be open and honest with.
Non Tommy fans are looking at the Tommy we first met back in season 2 (in the episode, Hen Begins) and they think he is the same person, but considering who his captain was and the environment he was in, of course he's going to join in and be one of the crew, but he grew up and matured which every person does. (expect for Gerrard). He was forgiving for his actions and he became a valuble member of the crew.
I think that this isn't last we see or hear from Tommy.
